Installation of Internal SATA Hard Drive

When I purchased the HP MediaSmart Server, I also purchased an additional 3.5" internal hard drive. Following the instructions that came with the server, I installed the hard drive. The hard drive appeared in the Server Storage Control Panel, but with the location of the drive as unknown, and when I tried to add it to the RAID, it would fail to format the hard drive.

Not knowing if I had purchased a bad hard drive, I inserted the hard drive into my SATA docking station, connected to my MacBook Pro. The hard drive mounted as an unformatted volume. I formatted the new hard drive with the FAT file system. After formatting, the hard drive mounted to my MacBook Pro with no problems.

I reinstalled the now-formatted hard drive in one of the server hard drive sleds and inserted it back into the server. This time the drive now had a location, Internal (ATA), Bay 2, and now I could add it to the RAID.

Apparently, Windows Home Server cannot format an unformatted hard drive.

Server Console

There can only be one session logged into the Server Console at a time.

Time Machine Setup

When I initially tried to set for HP to act as my Time Machine backup drive on the Mac Mini, I was having problems turning "on" the Backup Drive Status. A warning appeared telling me that the operation failed and to either reboot the system or re-install the software.

I decided to installed the HP MediaSmart software on Jill's laptop. The Time Machine setup went fine. Then I realized what the difference between the two machines was. The Mac Mini had the firewall turned on. When I turned off the firewall on the Mac mini, the Time Machine setup to the HP MediaSmart Server also went fine.

Updating HP MediaSmart Server Client Software

When you update the client software, you should:

  1. Reboot the client computer after installation.
  2. Re-enter the server name and server password in the HP MediaSmart Server preference panel in the System Preferences.

I noticed that after updating the client software, I was unable to reconnect to the server through the client software, giving me an "Unable to connect to the server" message. Though the server name and server password appeared authenticated in the preference panel, I re-entered the server name and server password anyways and that seemed to correct the issue.

Server Add-Ins

Advanced Admin Console

Advanced Admin Console allows you to extend the Windows Home Server console to various parts of your Windows Home Server's administration controls, giving you access to many server functions that would only be available if you remote accessed into the server itself.
